IVANOVA, E., T. STAYKOVA and I. VELCHEVA, 2008. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of heavy metal and cyanide-contaminated waters in some regions for production and processing of ore in Bulgaria. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 14: 262-268 This study generalizes the data of investigations on cytotoxic and genotoxic effect of heavy metaland cyanide-contaminated waters in 2001, 2003 and 2005. The water samples were collected from different water sources in the region of “Assarel-Medet” Copper Refinery Works. The contents of copper, arsenic, cadmium, lead, and cyanides (mg.dm-3) were determined using the method of automatic photometry. The Allium cepa and Pisum sativum plant systems were used for testing of the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of heavy metals and cyanides. A lower mitotic index and a higher frequency of chromosome aberrations were established in all test samples than in the control ones. Chromosome fragments, anaphase and telophase bridges, micronuclei, lagging chromosomes and C-mitotic effect in cells were observed. It was concluded that the pollution found in the regions for production and processing of ore has cytotoxic and genotoxic effect on cells and it could be a potential threat to water ecosystems and human health.

Cytogenetic effect of heavy-metal and cyanide in contaminated waters from the region of southwest Bulgaria
A study was made on the cytogenetic effect of heavy-metal and cyanide polluted waters from the region of Panagjurishte – Southwest Bulgaria. A plant test-system Allium cepa in vivo was used. A decreased cell division rate was established, and deviations from the normal mitosis in the result of chromosome mutations were registered. The method used is applicable for biological monitoring of water...
متن کاملPhytoremediation potential of heavy metals by two native pasture plants (Eucalyptus grandis and ailanthus altissima) assisted with AMF and fibrous minerals in contaminated mining regions
The current study assesses the effect of fibrous clay minerals’ amendments and arbuscular mycorrhiza incubation on heavy metal uptake and translocation in Eucalyptus grandis and Ailanthus altissima plants. For doing so, Eucalyptus and ailanthus trees have been grown in a soil sample, contaminated with heavy metal iron ore mining and collected from southern Iran. The area under study is arid, wi...

متن کاملGeochemical Distribution of Heavy Metals and Assessment of Environmental Indicators in Chah-Shaljami Polymetal Ore deposit, South of Birjand, Iran
The Chah-Shaljami polymetal ore deposit contains heavy metal anomalies in various mineralization zones. Geochemical distribution and correlation of elements in surficial soilsindicate that sulfide, sulfate, sulfosalt and silicate mineral occurrences (e.g. Pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, molybdenite, enargite, hornblend and biotite) in mineralization and stockwork zones resulted in the...
متن کاملAbility of some crops for phytoremediation of nickel and zinc heavy metals from contaminated soils
The present study was aimed at comparing the ability of three crop plants for phytoremediation of zinc (Zn) and nickel (Zn) from soils. A factorial (3×2×3) experiment based on RCBD was used to compare the treatments, and was repeated three times. The first factor was crop type (wheat, clover and rapeseed), the second factor was heavy metal types (zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni)) and the third factor ...
